  • A midwife is a person is supports women through pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum. There are many types of midwives. This page is dedicated to the Certified Nurse Midwives in the state of Indiana.

  • Doulas act as a support person to laboring women. They can also offer other services before and after birth. A certified nurse midwife is a healthcare professional trained in the art of birth and the practice of medicine. They are trained to identify risks and warning signs and intervene as needed. Certified Nurse Midwives can practice in the hospital, birth center or the home. CNMs also can provide Gynecological care as well.

  • While Certified Nurse Midwives are able to support families choosing homebirth, most midwives in the state of Indiana practice in the hospital setting and some work in birth centers.

  • There are many types of midwives and many paths to midwifery training. A Certified Nurse Midwife earns a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and then completes a Master’s Degree Program in Midwifery. In some states, a person can become a Certified Midwife without having a Nursing background.
